Voices of Future Generations: Honouring Children and Learning on the International Day of Education

Akwesasne, Ontario, February 6, 2025

On the International Day of Education, the National Sixties Scoop Healing Foundation of Canada was honoured to support and uplift the Voices of Future Generations Children’s Initiative—a program rooted in hope, learning, and the right of every child to grow with dignity, safety, and cultural connection.

The recent event brought children, families, educators, and community members together to recognize education not only as a pathway to opportunity, but as a vital tool for healing, identity, and self-determination. For Sixties Scoop Survivors and their families, education carries deep meaning—shaped by loss, resilience, and the ongoing work of reclaiming knowledge that was once denied.

Throughout the gathering, children were encouraged to express themselves through conversation, creativity, and shared learning. Their voices—curious, thoughtful, and full of promise—reminded us that the future is shaped when children are supported to learn in ways that honour who they are and where they come from.

The Voices of Future Generations initiative centres children as knowledge holders in their own right, recognizing that healing and reconciliation must include—and be guided by—those who will carry these stories forward. Education, when grounded in culture and community, becomes a powerfulact of restoration. As we reflect on the International Day of Education, we reaffirm our commitment to initiatives that support children, uplift families, and strengthen pathways for future generations to thrive. The voices we heard at this event are the voices shaping tomorrow—and they deserve to be listened to, protected, and celebrated.
