Hull Services is continuing its powerful work to support Sixties Scoop Survivors and their families through the Grass Roots Sixties Scoop Healing Our Spirit Walk, now entering its third year. Guided by Indigenous Elders, grounded in ceremony, and centered on community healing, the2025 event focuses on the theme: “Keeping Our Circle Strong Through Our Cultural Teachings.”
This grassroots initiative brings Survivors, descendants, and allies together to rebuild connections, honour lived experiences, and strengthen cultural knowledge through the teachings and leadership of Indigenous Elders.
Preparing the Path: August–October 2025 In the months leading up to the Healing Our Spirit Walk, Elders will gather for four preparation meetings. These sessions—held between August 1 and October 10, 2025—ensure that the event is guided with intention, cultural integrity, and care. Elders are recognized with honoraria, tobacco, and shared meals as they offer their knowledge and leadership.
These gatherings lay the foundation for an event grounded in respect, safety, and collective healing.
Event Day: October 11, 2025
The Sixties Scoop Healing Our Spirit Walk will take place on October 11, 2025, offering a full day of ceremony, reflection, and community connection.
Highlights of the day include: -Pipe ceremony to open the circle in a good way -Four cultural stops along the walk, each with Elder teachings and encouragement -Healing dance and drumming -Two guest speakers honouring Survivor stories and intergenerational healing -Cultural entertainment, including teepee teachings, storytelling, and Indigenous games -Prayer and smudge throughout the day to support grounding and wellness -Elder and counsellor support for those who may experience triggers or emotional responses -Participant satisfaction survey to strengthen future community-driven events
These activities reaffirm connection to land, ceremony, and culture—key elements in reclaiming a sense of belonging for Survivors and their families
Strengthening Community Through Culture
This year, approximately 250 people are expected to participate in the third annual Healing Our Spirit Walk. The planning committee, made up entirely of Indigenous members with lived experience of the Sixties Scoop, works closely with three Elders to ensure the event reflects cultural teachings and Survivors’ needs.
“Keeping Our Circle Strong Through Our Cultural Teachings” speaks to the heart of this work: strengthening relationships, reconnecting generations, and walking together toward healing.
